Julain Challis went exploring through Italy to see whether or not Benelli can break into the adventure bike market, with the new Benelli TRK 502 X. Here's how he got on… t's a big ask. For a tiny company like Benelli to break into the lucrative adventure bike market from its factory in the hills of rural Italy, it seems unlikely but carving the new TRK 502 X through the sweeping hairpins and fast back roads around Rossi's hometown of Tavullia, it doesn’t seem out of the question. The bike is genuinely grin inducing and unexpectedly fun to ride and as I chase after the appropriately named Lorenzo, my guide for the day, I'm pretty hooked on the Benelli. Now for all you more informed readers, there are a couple of slight inaccuracies within the opening paragraph. First off, the TRK 502 X may be a new production model, but it's based on an existing bike within the range, the TRK 502 launched last year. For 2018, Benelli has decided to wave the off-road wand very lightly over the more road-based model to create the X version. The changes are not that massive, but the addition of wire spoked wheels, a higher-level exhaust, tweaked suspension, a centre stand and some new graphics make the 502 X suitably different to its older sibling, even if the 19/17 wheel combination indicate that not that much off-roading is actually anticipated – much the same as most of the adventure sector then

An off-road soul, pure Leoncino style. Benelli introduces the new Leoncino 800 Trail, a motorcycle with a distinct off-road spirit, brought out by the double exhaust in a raised position and the 19” front wheel. This model extends the range of the Pesaro-based manufacturer and is designed to bring out the authenticity of the Leoncino line concept. This “modern-classic” two-wheeler is sporty and dynamic, an all-round evolution that shares state-of-the-art technical and style features with its road sister, the 800. The 754-cc twin-cylinder, four-stroke engine is liquid cooled and is the same as the one mounted on Leoncino 800. It unleashes 81.6 HP (60 kW) at 9000 rpm and a torque of 67 Nm (6.8 kgm) at 6500 rpm, in order to ensure pure fun and performance off-road. It features double overhead camshaft timing with 4 valves per cylinder and the double throttle body of 43 mm diameter. The wet anti-slip clutch and 6-speed gearbox are also worth mentioning. The chassis was revised in order to better tackle off-road terrains, where uneven surfaces are the currency. The frame is a tubular trellis with steel plates, the same as the road version, which ensures easy and nimble handling on the road. In turn, the suspensions have been upgraded: the Marzocchi up-side down front fork with 50 mm diameter legs, with adjustable rebound, compression and pre-load, has longer travel, from 130 mm in the road model to 140 mm in the Trail one. The same upgrade took place on the rear, with a single, central swinging arm with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping, whose travel was also increased (140 mm). As a consequence, the seat was raised from 800 mm in the road model to 818 mm in the Trail one. The knobby Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, 120/70 19” in the front and 170/60 17” in the rear, complete the set of technical upgrades. The Brembo braking system, the same as Leoncino 800, is exceptionally safe thanks to the double 320 mm diameter semi-floating disc on the front and four-piston radialmount mono-block calliper, and a 260 mm diameter disc on the back with a doublepiston calliper. As another characteristic, Leoncino 800 Trail stands out for ambitious and sophisticated style elements in a perfect off-road fashion, such as the high headlight fairing located right above the full-led front light, featuring the well-known Leoncino series arc. The new double exhaust in higher position defined the bike silhouette and gives it a rally spirit. The exhaust was developed specifically for the Trail version, as well as the number plate holder and the heat shield on the side, which also bring out the off-road inclination of this model. The muscle, carved-out lines of the steel tank are in common with Leoncino 800; designed to bring out the power and dynamic appeal of this motorcycle, it features the distinctive arc, this time matched with two bumpers on the tank guard. Moreover, the Trail version features latest-technology TFT instruments on a dashboard that stands out for its modern and authentic design. The seat is envisioned to always ensure great comfort even on the toughest terrains. Underneath the seat, consistently with Leoncino 800, there is an aluminium panel thought to display the Leoncino logo. On the mudguard, the unmistakeable symbol of the range: a Lion. Leoncino 800 Trail will be available from the second half of 2020.
Faithful to the philosophy and concept of "Timeless Desire", which has distinguished the Leoncino range from the beginning, here is the new Benelli Leoncino 800. A true evolution for the modern-classic of the House of Pesaro, which now presents a two wheels with an essential and authentic style, a balanced mix of classic and modern stylistic elements, which go perfectly with the most advanced 754cc engine in the range. Leoncino 800 shows the muscles compared to the smaller sisters, presenting itself with much harder and more sculpted shapes, capable of enhancing power and dynamism, with a collected silhouette but at the same time slender and with extremely balanced proportions. In the pure elegance of the lines and in the modernity of its style, Leoncino 800 expresses all its essence and uniqueness, while maintaining what are the iconic elements of the Leoncino range. In fact, even in the 800cc version we find the stylistic element of the bow, which characterizes the entire range and which is faithful to both the headlight and the tank. Elements and details that at the same time are also the most advanced with respect to the 250cc and 500cc versions, but which give a clear sense of belonging to the typical style of the Leoncino, maintaining its own family feeling. The frame is a tubular truss with steel plates, completely new, able to integrate perfectly with the design and to ensure maximum agility and maneuverability on the road for any type of driver, without ever giving up the maximum driving fun. Attention to details and authentic materials characterize Leoncino 800: the tank, with its angular and modern lines, is made of sheet steel and houses the Benelli logo, as usual. To embed the Leoncino logo under the saddle is instead an aluminum side panel with modern lines, which develops seamlessly towards the tank, creating a simple but unique and sophisticated style element. The projector, which incorporates the most modern lines of the Leoncino 250, is entirely LED and presents an original and sophisticated design, emphasized by the arched design and the Benelli Leoncino logo positioned in the center. State-of-the-art TFT instrumentation for a dashboard with a modern and authentic design. The saddle, able to guarantee maximum rider and passenger comfort also integrates perfectly with the lines of the bike, as well as the exhaust design, with balanced and modern proportions. A special mention to the Lion who, as in the historical bike and as in the rest of the range, stands proudly on the front fender. Leoncino 800 also has a standard center stand
